Beach House

>> August 14, 2012

With summer winding down (say it ain't so!) and the annual Cape trip a thing of the past, I am seriously dreading colder weather. (Although I love fall-time clothing, it really maximizes my wardrobe.) With fewer and fewer beach days in our immediate future, I've been doing a little day dreaming. About real estate.

Oh, how I would love to own a beach house. A quiet little escape we could whisk away to on the weekends, to escape our regular lives, be sandy, wear no make-up, and get a little tan on. If I had my own beach house, it would look something like this...

The house would be classic New England; covered in weathered wood shingles, with a bright and cheery front door to welcome us for the weekend.

The house would have white exposed plank everywhere (I am currently obsessed with the casualness of this look, which is why we installed it in our bedroom). And all the furniture would be arranged for relaxing and socializing. No TV allowed. Just reading, chatting and board games - and the view, of course. We'd have to be able to admire the ocean view.
The kitchen would be set-up for entertaining (you're all invited to my imaginary beach house!) and good conversations. I love the mix of finishes in this one, but it would obviously be smaller. Obviously. I am not Richy Rich, even in my day dreams.
Even the laundry room would be impossibly stylish. God knows, I'd probably be doing a fair amount of sand-filled laundry.
The house would be filled with a few subtle, but appropriate details.
And there would be plenty of cozy and inviting sleeping nooks for all my guests. All the bedding would be mix and match quilts, loved with time and constant use.
The master bedroom would be a relaxing sanctuary, perfect for taking naps enveloped by the salty breeze. It would also have the best view, clearly. (Sorry everyone, this is my day dream.)
And Caroline would have her very own space with plenty of space for sleepovers and friends who tag along for the ride.

And of course, no beach house is complete without an outdoor shower, for washing off the remnants of the ocean.
And, since this is a day dream, the house would be impossibly close to the ocean, but would never have any threat of hurricane, erosion, or storm damage.

Love all the inspiration photos, especially the stairs with the rope and cleats.

I'm seriously dreading winter too, and with a few unseasonably cooler August days already here, it's coming too fast! And yes, but I'd like to own something on a Florida beach. I love me some Florida!

@Pine Tree Home - thanks for the comment! I love those stairs too - I thought it was so inventive!

@Sarah - the beaches in Florida are so prime. We visit every late winter/early spring, and I love the warm water. It would make it more difficult to head down for the weekend from Mass though!

xoxo, Shannon

This is my dream house, too! Can I get your contractor's number? You know, we did buy the plot of land right next to yours- almost the exact same view! And obvi, Colin and Caroline will be best summer pals. ;)
