Cape Cod, part 1

>> July 31, 2012

Well, we're back from vacation. It was lovely; a week off without access to email and barely a TV to watch. It was just the type of unplugging that we needed. The Wellfleet cottage is not anything fancy, but Hubby and his family have been visiting for years, so it feels familiar and well loved.  It was a treat to bring Caroline back again this summer and I know Nana and Grandpa enjoyed spending quality time with the Love Bug.

Our first couple days were quite relaxing. It didn't take us long to settle in and take things down a notch. Our last vacation was in March, so this one felt long overdue. How often do you and your family decide to take time off? More often than we do, most likely. Good for you. Don't do as I do.

Wellfleet is on the small-side, in terms of Cape towns - but frankly, I like it that way. It's nice to take a vacation in a setting that is totally different from the everyday. I like visiting the other towns, with more bustle and shopping; but when it comes to unplugging, Wellfleet fits the bill. We swung by Mac's seafood shack for ice cream (admittedly) more than a few times. The pier makes for an enjoyable walk, looking at the sunset over low tide, the boats marooned during low tide, and checking out the (creative!) boat names.

The first two days we were joined by Hubby's brother and our sister-in-law, as well as their great dane, Duke. Riley and Duke have gotten to know each other over the years, and it is always quite comical to see them standing side-by-side.

The cottage has private beach access, which, as you can see from the above photos, is quite picturesque. There is no shortage of space to spread out your beach gear and hang out. Riley loves going to the beach, occasionally we even take her to the beaches near home. But having seemingly unlimited amount of space to run, just can't be beat. Caroline was screeching with delight, just watching Riley release some energy.

The Wellfleet cottage sits high above the National Seashore and protected dunes, and they are quite the sight. If you ever have a chance to visit the area and take a look, they are breathtaking. We went for walks on the beach almost every evening after dinner. I also managed to get some good reading in - finishing four magazines and a book (stunning). I haven't the opportunity to read that much since before Caroline's arrival.

I have more pictures of some of our outings, but it was to much for one post. I will be back with the rest of our vacation soon!

@Sarah - thanks! I really liked how they turned out. It's fun to capture Caroline's early vacations and all her "firsts".

@Shannon - that's one of my favorites too!

@Jane - Wellfleet is gorgeous and there are plenty of public beaches near by. This beach is just down the way from the Beachcomber - a very popular bar on the Cape and worth a stop too!

Thanks all!
Shannon
